The only thing is that ending up as high as possible on the first page will lead to increased traffic. No one really knows for sure how Search Engines works. They use complex algorithmic processes that are constantly changing to stay ahead of the game. The game of course is the ongoing struggle between those sites that have inherent value for their visitors and the ever increasing number of sites created simply as "get rich quick" schemes. After all, the Internet has become the new frontier for entrepreneurs of all types as well as for scam artists and out and out thieves.

Why Focus on Google? So let's step back for a moment and ask "Why "is there a need to focus on Google since it is the king of the Search world, controlling somewhere close to 80% of the Internet Search market. Go to Google's home page and you will find they see their mission as "organizing the world's information and making it universally accessible and useful." Google co-founder Larry Page says "the perfect search engine would understand exactly what you mean and give back exactly what you want." Internet technology has opened the door to literally billions of people who are looking for something and Google ranks sites with the goal of helping Internet users find what they need. The takeaway from this discussion is this: if you have a website that fulfills the needs of Internet users, Google will find you. The Google philosophy is based on ten core principles the first of which is "Focus on the User and all else will follow."
If you build it, Will They Come? Unfortunately, many Website owners spend more time focusing on trying to beat Google at its own game than they do focusing on the needs of their users. They spend an indefinite amount of time looking for tricks that will bring users to their site. They fail to spend time assessing the needs of their potential users and ensuring that the content of their sites addresses those needs. You may remember the movie "Field of Dreams" that came out in the late 1980's. In it an Iowa farmer out walking in a cornfield hears a voice whispering to him: "If you build it, he will come."
Too many Sticky Websites: The lesson to be drawn is simple. If you build a quality website, the visitors will come. It may take time to get "discovered" and there are certain aspects of SEO you can use to speed things up, but ultimately a quality site will attract visitors if it has inherent value. And what's more, not only will they come, they will stay.
Quality websites are "sticky" -- visitors do not take a few seconds and then hit the back button on their browsers to exit the site. If you're really interested in increasing traffic, remember "why" Google search does what it does and focus on your users and their needs. As Google says, 'if you do this, All else will follow.
